Your Gym Habit Might Be Setting You Up for a Gout Attack
You hit the gym four or five times a week. You track your macros. You chug a protein shake after every workout, snack on protein bars between meals, and pile your plate high with chicken, steak, and eggs. You’re doing all the right things, right?
Then your doctor looks up from your blood work and says two words you didn’t expect: high uric acid.
That’s exactly what happened to a fit, active guy in his mid-30s writing for British GQ earlier this month. He worked out often, played football a couple times a week, sat at around 15% body fat, and ate roughly 200 grams of protein a day. His doctor’s question caught him off guard: “Do you eat a lot of protein?”
If you’re chasing gains and hammering protein at every meal, here’s what you need to know before your big toe starts screaming at you in the middle of the night.
What Proteinmaxxing Actually Does to Your Uric Acid
Proteinmaxxing is the internet-born trend of cramming as much protein into your day as possible. Protein shakes for breakfast. Double chicken at lunch. Protein chips as a snack. Another shake before bed. The logic sounds reasonable enough: protein builds muscle, so more protein builds more muscle.
But your body isn’t a bottomless construction site. It can only use so much.
“The body can only absorb about 30 grams of protein per intake,” said Lisa Froechtenigt, a registered dietitian at Baylor College of Medicine, in a recent article breaking down the trend. Anything beyond that gets processed by your kidneys or stored as fat. When a shake delivers 45 grams of protein in one go, a big chunk of it is surplus.
Here’s where gout enters the picture. Many high-protein foods, especially red meat and certain seafood, contain compounds called purines. Your body breaks purines down into uric acid. Most of the time, your kidneys filter that uric acid out and you pee it away. But when purine intake is chronically high and hydration is low, uric acid can build up in your blood. That’s the same mechanism behind why heavy workouts can trigger gout flares, since sweat loss and dehydration concentrate your blood. Eventually, it forms sharp, needle-like crystals in a joint, and you get a gout attack.
“This is a real thing,” said Dr. Spencer Kroll, an internal medicine specialist, in the GQ story. “As we’re seeing this explosion of protein availability and encouragement, we’re running into some problems.”
Dr. Kroll described a patient who came in hobbling because he couldn’t walk. The guy had been eating massive amounts of protein to bulk up. His uric acid was through the roof. The fix wasn’t complicated: cut back on protein, especially meat, and take medication for the acute pain.

The Numbers Behind the Trend
Gout used to be called the “disease of kings.” Rich old men who ate too much venison and drank too much port. That stereotype is overdue for an update.
Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey shows that 3.9% of U.S. adults, about 9.2 million people, had gout in 2016. Of those, 5.9 million were men. Gout cases among people aged 10 to 24 have jumped more than 20% in recent years, and projections in The Lancet Rheumatology estimate a 70% global increase by 2050.
Part of that is better diagnosis. Doctors are catching gout in younger people more often. But part of it is also what’s on the plate.
Kylie King, a dietitian quoted in the GQ piece, said she noticed the shift about five years ago. “I was suddenly having a lot of clients come in with these protein recommendations that were given to them by their personal trainers or what they were seeing online,” she said. Since then, the trend has only intensified.
On TikTok, videos tagged #gout have racked up more than 426 million views. The r/gout community on Reddit has grown to 39,000 members, with allopurinol, colchicine, and flare-ups among the most discussed topics. These aren’t retirees comparing notes on claret. They’re young guys who thought they were doing the healthy thing.
Whey vs. Pea Protein: One Might Actually Raise Your Uric Acid
If you use protein powder, the type you pick matters more than you might think.
A randomized crossover trial published in 2026 put three forms of pea protein up against whey protein in 20 healthy young adults. The researchers tracked amino acid levels, blood sugar, insulin, and uric acid over a five-hour window after each drink.
The unexpected finding: pea protein raised uric acid levels in the blood, while whey protein actually lowered them.
This was the first study to look specifically at uric acid response after pea protein consumption. The rise was acute, meaning it happened in the hours after drinking the shake. It’s still unclear whether daily pea protein use leads to chronically elevated uric acid over time. But if you already have a history of high uric acid or gout, it’s worth talking to your doctor before making pea protein your daily go-to.
Whey’s edge doesn’t stop at uric acid. The study also found whey delivered significantly more essential amino acids to the bloodstream, produced a faster and higher spike in leucine (the amino acid most directly tied to muscle building), and didn’t have the methionine gap that pea protein showed.
That doesn’t mean plant-based eaters are out of luck. Other research has found pea protein supports muscle building comparably to animal protein in younger adults. But if gout is a concern, the uric acid finding is worth noting.
It’s Not Just Gout. Kidney Stones Are a Risk Too.

“It’s usually going to result from higher protein, especially animal protein, in combination with low hydration,” King explained.
There’s a second, less obvious stone risk. About 80% of kidney stones are calcium oxalate stones. They’re not directly caused by purines or uric acid. But when someone shifts to a heavily protein-based diet, they sometimes skimp on calcium-rich foods like dairy and leafy greens. Low dietary calcium can actually increase the risk of calcium oxalate stones, because calcium normally binds oxalate in the gut before it reaches the kidneys.
“They may be isolating the protein from dairy products, as in the case of whey, which doesn’t contain a lot of calcium,” Dr. Kroll said. “So those people are at increased risk for calcium stones.”
Family history roughly doubles kidney stone risk, so if stones run in your family, you have even more reason to pay attention.
How Much Protein Is Actually Enough?
Let’s be clear: protein isn’t the enemy. It’s a critical macronutrient that builds muscle, repairs cells, and helps regulate hormones and appetite. The problem is the dose and the source.
For most active people, 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day is a reasonable target. That’s 126 to 180 grams for a 180-pound guy. Even serious lifters rarely need more than that.
“There’s really no reason for a person to pack in more than 200 grams of protein per day,” Dr. Kroll said. “It’s like taking in too many vitamins. It’s just going into the toilet.”
He recommends keeping protein to no more than 40% of your total calories. Froechtenigt at Baylor suggests aiming for 20 to 30 grams of protein per main meal rather than trying to front-load or back-load massive amounts.
The type of protein matters too. Not all purines hit your body the same way.
“There are some plants and vegetable products that have purines in them, but, interestingly, it seems from the data that their purines don’t cause the gout symptoms,” Dr. Kroll said. Dairy proteins like whey and casein may actually help your body excrete uric acid, which is part of why low-fat dairy is often recommended for people with gout.
Red meat and certain seafood, like anchovies, sardines, mussels, and scallops, are the heavy hitters when it comes to purine load. You don’t have to cut them out altogether, but if you’re eating steak or seafood twice a day and washing it down with protein shakes, you might want to reconsider.
What You Can Do Starting Today
If the proteinmaxxing lifestyle sounds familiar and you haven’t had your uric acid checked, a simple blood test at your next physical will tell you where you stand. Normal uric acid is typically below 6.8 mg/dL for men, and staying below 6 mg/dL is the target if you already have gout.
A few practical moves:
- Space it out. Aim for 20 to 30 grams of protein per meal rather than dumping 60 grams into one post-workout shake. Your muscles can only use so much at once.
- Drink more water. “Whatever form of protein you choose, increasing your water intake will potentially lead to a reduction and better excretion of uric acid,” Dr. Kroll said. This is especially true if you’re training hard and sweating heavily.
- Mix your sources. Swap some red meat for chicken, fish that’s lower in purines (like salmon), eggs, low-fat dairy, tofu, lentils, or beans. You’ll still get protein, but you’ll also get fiber, calcium, and other nutrients that a meat-heavy plate might be missing.
- Don’t skip the carbs and fat. “Diet culture emphasizes protein, but we’re missing out on the other two macronutrients: fat and carbs,” Froechtenigt said. Your body needs all three. Carbs fuel your workouts, and fats support hormone production, including testosterone.
- Read the supplement label. If your protein powder is packed with added sugar, fructose, or a long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce, it may be doing more harm than good. Fructose, in particular, is known to raise uric acid production in the liver.
When to See a Doctor
If you’ve already had a gout attack, don’t try to manage it on protein adjustments alone. Seek medical attention promptly if you develop sudden, severe joint pain, especially in your big toe, ankle, or knee, accompanied by redness, swelling, and warmth. These are classic signs of a gout flare. If you have a history of gout and your attacks are becoming more frequent or more severe, that’s a reason to talk to a rheumatologist about long-term urate-lowering therapy, not something to power through.
The bottom line: protein is good. Gout is bad. You don’t have to choose one or the other. Eat enough protein to support your training, drink enough water to flush your kidneys, vary your sources, and get your blood work done. The guy in the GQ story caught his high uric acid before it turned into a full-blown gout attack. Not everyone gets that warning.
