Even after switching from whey protein to protein-fortified milk, his levels stayed elevated.

Was the whey protein alone to blame? Probably not. The researchers noted that chronic high-protein dietary consumption played a significant role. But the case highlights something important: you can be lean, fit, and active and still develop hyperuricemia if your total protein intake is excessive.

Dietary purines only account for about 30 percent of the uric acid in your body. The rest comes from your own cellular processes.
